We organized a sweet, exclusive honey tasting session at the enchanting Attica Botanical Park, just a short drive from Athens International Airport. The setting? Pure magic, with beekeeping plants like lavender, spearmint, thyme, savory, and more all in full, glorious bloom.
A honeyed tasteful experience
Our guests were Jennifer and Arthur, two hobbyist beekeepers from San Francisco, who buzzed off to Athens for their spring holidays.
After a quick dive into the wonders of honey production in Greece and the fascinating lives of honey bees, we got into the fun part—explaining how we describe and taste honey. We kicked things off by checking out each honey type’s general appearance, noting the color and texture. Then, we moved on to the scent, flavor, and how long the taste lingers.
We began our tasting adventure with blossom honeys like Orange, Thyme, and Sunflower. Then, we moved on to the rich honeydews, sampling Fir, Pine, and Oak honeys. Finally, we wrapped up with some bolder flavors from Heather, Strawberry Tree, and Chestnut honeys.
During the honey tasting session, we spiced things up with a food pairing game, matching three different traditional Greek cheeses with various honeys to create a medley of delicious combinations. It was a taste bud extravaganza!
We had an absolutely fantastic time and hope Jennifer and Arthur are inspired to expand their apiary in San Francisco,California. Here's to them producing local honey and enjoying the buzz of beekeeping right in their backyard!
